The film then 1Agoes back to earlier in the day, depicting Grant’s life including relationships with family, friends and co-workers. The film also incorporates actual footage of Grant being detained by police at Fruitvale station prior to the shooting. The film was shot on location in Oakland, California including some scenes from the transit platform where Grant was killed. Author Kathryn Stockett also invested in the film. Actress Octavia Spencer, who stars in the film, waived her salary to reduce costs. Some of the movie was funded by actor Forest Whitaker’s production company. As Coogler was an unknown writer/director just coming out of film school, the film project had a minimal budget. Coogler would spend the next year researching Grant’s life, including interviews with his family.
